Toner Terminology
Our goal is to educate you so that you can make an informed decision when purchasing ink or toner for your copier, fax, or printer machines.
OEM – In this reference O.E.M doesn’t refer to the band that some of you know but rather an acronym that stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. OEM's are generally referred to as the brand names such as Brother, Canon, Dell, Epson, HP, Ricoh, Xerox and other house hold names that you may know. These known manufacturer's make equipment and supplies that are considered to be the OEM's. Of lately, 3rd Party Manufacturer’s are marketing themselves as OEM as well, causing major confusion with the buyers and sellers of these toner cartridges. To signify the difference you will hear the term Genuine in lace of OEM or in lieu of. Click on this link to see an example OEM HP LaserJet Cartridge or Genuine HP Brand LaserJet Toner.
Remanufactured Toner Cartridges - Are toner cartridges that are re-used and refurbished. These cartridges are known as Eco-Friendly because the cartridge is used over several times before being grinded down. After an OEM or Genuine Cartridge has been used, the cartridge is then re-filled, re-used and the parts are replaced causing the cartridge to be known as a Reman or Remanufactured Toner Cartridge. These cartridges typically save you more money versus brand names.
Compatible Toner or Compatible Inkjet – These are typically interchangeable with Remanufactured toner cartridges but can also mean something else. Some 3rd Party Manufacturers produce a compatible toner or inkjet that is completely new and made from scratch just like the genuine cartridge. So in this instance you cannot call the cartridge Remanufactured. To view an example please click on Compatible Ricoh Aficio MPC2050 Toner cartridge. This is 100% new and not remanufactured but is not made by Ricoh but rather a 3rd party manufacturer.
Toner – Is a powdery substance and is designed to be used with laser technology.
Ink – Ink is a liquid substance used in inkjet cartridges for inkjet printers. These are generally smaller in size but cost a lot of money. They can be bought in Genuine Brands and Remanufactured too.
Inkjet Printer – This is a printer that uses little canisters of ink and the ink is transferred to the paper using a little jet, hence the term inkjet printer. These are not Laser printers.
Laser Printer – These printers use laser technology that heats the toner onto the paper when printing. Hopefully we clarified some terms used with toner. If you should have any other questions, please do not hesitate to call our friendly staff.
